Rose & Jojoba Skin Care Oil | WholeGreenLove.com

With spring finally here…or should I say soon to arrive, I’ve been in the mood for all things spring. This not only includes edibles like fresh salads and deliciously tender asparagus, but body care products that are florally and remind me of the soon to come flowers that will beautify our landscape.

Just like someone’s taste buds can change and adapt to different flavors and textures, I think our liking to different scents can change as well. I’ve always enjoyed the smell of roses outside, but until recently I’ve never liked the scent in body care products.

I had gotten a sample of body care oil that was scented with rose essential oil. I wasn’t too keen on trying it, but thought what the heck…might as well!

Rose & Jojoba Skin Care Oil | WholeGreenLove.com

I was surprised to find that it smelled great and I enjoyed having the lingering scent of rose around me. It was a fresh, clean scent that reminded me of warmer days, which is exactly what a girl needs this time of year.

Instead of purchasing this product I thought to myself…I could so easily make this scent combo!

I don’t like a very strong rose scented oil, so this was a perfect combination to have just a hint of rose. Feel free to add a little more rose if you’d prefer a more potent scent.

Rose & Jojoba Skin Care Oil | WholeGreenLove.com

This light florally scent is uplifting and calming. Perfect for this time of year when you are ready for spring to show it’s sunny face.  You can make a larger batch of rose body oil if you want to fully slather up in it, or in my case I like to just put a little dusting of it all over, so I’m not super oily. I will use more if I’m going to bed after I put it on.

It’s a super hydrating oil that helps your skin hold moisture to stay nice and soft. Plus, you can use it all over including your face. It’s very spa like if you ask me…just without the price!

I hope this oil combo helps tide you over until spring is in full gear. I know I’m more than ready!

Is Your Humidifier Making You Sick? http://wholegreenlove.com/2014/02/20/is-your-humidifier-making-you-sick/ http://wholegreenlove.com/2014/02/20/is-your-humidifier-making-you-sick/#comments Fri, 21 Feb 2014 02:54:53 +0000 http://wholegreenlove.com/?p=5751

Is your humidifier making you sick? | WholeGreenLove.com

We are addicts to our humidifiers in the winter. The air indoors in Wisconsin is so flipping dry in the winter. As soon as November hits and the temps drop, our humidifiers are cranked.

But not too high.

I wrote a post a while back about how using a humidifier can be helpful in maintaining your overall health. You can read this post here.

There is a problem with too much humidity. What does that mean, you ask? Here are a few questions to ask yourself.

Do you get condensation on your windows when you use your humidifier?

Is there mold growing on your windowsills?

Does it feel a bit like a jungle when you enter a room you are using a humidifier in?

Do people in your home experience recurring colds?

Too much humidity can cause mold growth and increases dust mite growth. Both of these problems can lead to allergies and breathing irritations.

Here are some helpful tips to use a humidifier properly in the winter, in order to aid in staying healthy

  • Monitor the humidity level and make sure it stays below 50%.
  • Open windows periodically to let in fresh, dry air.
  • Strictly follow the cleaning instructions included with your humidifier. It may seem excessive and time consuming. But ain’t nobody got time for a sick household and doctor visits.
  • Use distilled water to cut down on mineral buildup, which can lead to increased bacteria growth.
  • Another benefit of using distilled water is that you avoid minerals getting into the air, which can make their way into your child’s (or your!) lungs.

My fingers are crossed that this winter weather and humidifier season ends quickly! Until then, pull out the vinegar and keep those humidifiers clean!

Why Being a Christian Affects the Way I Eat and Feed My Family http://wholegreenlove.com/2014/02/05/why-being-a-christian-affects-the-way-i-eat-and-feed-my-family/ http://wholegreenlove.com/2014/02/05/why-being-a-christian-affects-the-way-i-eat-and-feed-my-family/#comments Thu, 06 Feb 2014 01:59:12 +0000 http://wholegreenlove.com/?p=5714

Why Being a Christian Affects the Way I Eat and Feed My Family | WholeGreenLove.com

If are you are a regular reader of this blog, you know that our first love is food. Real, wholesome, from scratch, nourishing food. We don’t avoid flour, sugar, fat, dairy, or other things that some blogs avoid because we love it all because we think that moderate consumption of everything made from scratch (even some sugar) is okay. What first comes to my mind when I think of eating real food, staying active, and keeping my family’s life in balance is certainly the fact that it makes us feel good, get sick less often, have more energy, sleep well, and hopefully prevent chronic illnesses down the road. These things are well-documented and researched benefits of a healthy lifestyle.

I heard someone say recently that they think people need to be less “crazy” about the foods they eat. She felt very strongly that God has a plan for everyone and even if you avoid all of that junk, you can still end up with cancer if that is the plan He has for you. She said it’s great to be educated about food, but to stop getting so hung up on nutrition because if God wants you to get cancer, you will.

What do you think?

I’m well aware of the fact that people who work hard to avoid environmental toxins, food dyes, GMO foods, and junk food in general may still get cancer or some other disease. And someone who eats crap food, never exercises, and drinks food dye cool aid all day long, might never develop any kind of illness. God has a plan for everyone.

But here’s why I think it’s important we are conscious of our food choices and overall health decisions, from a Christian standpoint.

As a Christian, a very easy place to go first is the reminder in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 that our body is a temple of the Holy Spirit.

1 Corinthians 6: 19-20: Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.

While this passage is referring to sexual immorality and not specifically to the food we put in our body, God’s desire is for us to honor Him with our body. That means nourishing it with healthy foods and not polluting it with junk. Also, how are we to carry out His plan and be good witness for Him if we are constantly dealing with the consequences of an unhealthy lifestyle? We can certainly serve God and others more effectively if we have first taken the time to nourish ourselves properly.

If you take a trip back to Genesis and the Garden of Eden we know that God created man and woman with care and consideration. In the same way that we wish a safe, happy, and healthy life for our own children, God wants the same for what He created – for us to respect and care for our bodies.

The Bible also reminds us that God calls us to be stewards of the earth and the animals that live on it.

Genesis 1:28: God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”

Leviticus 25:23-24: The land is mine and you are but aliens and my tenants. Throughout the country that you hold as a possession, you must provide for the redemption of the land.

We may need to rethink our regular purchases at the grocery store as it related to feedlot beef, chickens raised inhumanely, and produce coming from farms that destroy the earth with their pesticide use. While most people make the decision to spend more time sourcing their food strictly for health reasons, have you thought of how your dollar influences the care or destruction of the earth and the animals on it? Are you supporting farmers who would treat the animals the same way that you would if you cared for animals in your own back yard? What would God think of the way that we are currently caring for and managing his creation? Since most of us are no longer farmers to be direct stewards of the land and animals, do our purchases support what would be pleasing to Him?

Whether you are a Christian or not, you are likely making good food choices already if you are a regular reader of this blog. My goal with this post was to think about real food and caring for ourselves from a little bit of a different perspective.

Besides the obvious health benefits of being mindful of eating a healthy diet, why are those choices important to you?

How to Render Tallow in a Slow Cooker http://wholegreenlove.com/2013/11/27/how-to-render-tallow-in-a-slow-cooker/ http://wholegreenlove.com/2013/11/27/how-to-render-tallow-in-a-slow-cooker/#comments Thu, 28 Nov 2013 01:32:50 +0000 http://wholegreenlove.com/?p=5479

I thought the butcher gave us a bag of brains when we picked up our quarter cow last month. Everything was packaged and wrapped in white paper, and very nicely labeled. And then there was this clear plastic bag of what seriously looked like a brain. As I started to dig deep and pull my knowledge up from the depths of my college anatomy class, Nic blurts out, “That’s a bag of fat.” A big bag of beautiful tallow!

Well, actually it wasn’t tallow yet. What I had was a big bag of suet, the interior fat tissue of the cow. To get good use out of suet, you first need to gently heat it to remove the fat from the rest of the tissue. This heating and separation process is called “rendering”.

Rendered tallow can be used for many things, including high heat cooking (just like butter and lard) and in beauty products. It’s an excellent remedy for eczema! Click here to get my recipe for Deep Moisturizing Body Salve made with tallow. I recently made a new batch that spreads on your skin more like lotion. I just increased the amount of olive oil in the recipe to make it more spreadable. My skin feels ah-MAH-zing. (Happy Endings, anyone?)

Happy tallow rendering!

What types of things do you cook in tallow?

Deep Moisturizing Body Salve http://wholegreenlove.com/2013/11/04/deep-moisturizing-body-salve/ http://wholegreenlove.com/2013/11/04/deep-moisturizing-body-salve/#comments Tue, 05 Nov 2013 02:44:35 +0000 http://wholegreenlove.com/?p=5428

It’s that time of year again. The time of chilly days, hot tea, slipper boots, bundled up afternoon walks, and nights of holiday prep. I love it. I feel like Fall could have stuck around a bit longer…but I love the anticipation of the Christmas season.

The hubs and I took two days away this weekend to celebrate our anniversary. Our daughter stayed with my parents and we had such a relaxing time in Lake Geneva together. Has anyone else ever been? We don’t make the time to go enough.

Lake Geneva

One not-so-awesome thing about this time of year is the dry air and skin in need some a little extra love. My hands get SO dry! It’s a combination of all the hand washing and time in the kitchen that really does a number on them. I especially noticed the dry air when sleeping in our hotel room this weekend. Lyla’s cheeks also get really chapped in the winter. And I’m not going to stop smooching on those cheeks. I needed another solution.

Deep Moisturizing Body Salve | WholeGreenLove.com

Traditionally made skin products contained animal fats, up until the push to also remove animal fats from our diet. Good luck finding animal fats in store bought skin products. You just won’t find it. Because saturated fat makes up about 50 percent of our cell walls, it makes sense to use something on our skin that is of similar makeup. Tallow is 50-55 percent saturated fat, with the remainder being monounsaturated. (Click here to read more) It makes the perfect topical moisturizer for the skin. Plus, olive oil, which contains mostly monounsaturated fat, is a great addition to the salve. It adds a type of fat that is also in line with the makeup of your skin cells, and it is liquid at room temperature so it makes the salve more spreadable.

Wondering where you can find tallow? When we got our quarter cow this year, I requested the tallow (also called suet, before it’s been rendered). You could also contact your local butcher and request it from them. Your best bet is fat from a cow that has been raised in healthy conditions, grass fed, and without hormones or antibiotics. Toxins are known to be stored in fat, which is exactly what tallow is.

Got a big hunk of fat that needs to be rendered into tallow? I have a post coming soon that will show you how to easily render tallow in your crockpot.

DIY Honey Pumpkin Face Mask http://wholegreenlove.com/2013/10/27/diy-honey-pumpkin-face-mask/ http://wholegreenlove.com/2013/10/27/diy-honey-pumpkin-face-mask/#comments Sun, 27 Oct 2013 13:46:48 +0000 http://wholegreenlove.com/?p=5400

I try to pamper my skin at least once a week with a nice, homemade face mask. I don’t like messing around with figuring out what ingredients are in the store bought varieties, and I’m a little cheap when it comes to pampering myself. So, the DIY face mask is always the way to go. This pumpkin version is perfect for this fall season. We use pumpkin in so many recipes this time of year that I always have a little extra in the fridge.

Honey Pumpkin Face Mask | WholeGreenLove.com

All of the ingredients in this recipe have a purpose in pampering your skin:

  • Pumpkin contains antioxidants and enzymes
  • The lactic acid in plain yogurt helps exfoliate the skin
  • Jojoba oil moisturizes without clogging pores
  • Honey is anti fungal and anti bacterial to reduce breakouts

You’ve heard us talk about this super awesome End of Summer eBook Bundle: 30 Real Food & Healthy Living eBooks for only $39 (a $650 value) and available only through Tuesday, September 10th. That is a 90% savings. Boom.

Simply Salads by Season (written by Kristen Michaelis from the blog Food Renegade) is one of my favorites in the bundle. In my opinion, it’s a perfectly put together book for quick and simple salads with a real food focus. This book is the best because:

  1. The recipe ingredients are all real food items.
  2. The book provides guidance on sourcing the best possible ingredients.
  3. Simply Salads is organized by seasonal ingredients, which makes meal planning easier and cost effective.

Simply Salads by Season

A few salad dressing recipes that caught my eye:

  • Homemade ketchup – used as an ingredient in some of the dressings or great as a condiment for anything else you are eating at home
  • Ranch dressing – no more bottled, store bought dressing or powdered “homemade” versions!
  • Dill vinaigrette – just yum.
  • Homemade Worcestershire sauce – which is super awesome because we put a dash of this in just about everything. The store bought version contains corn syrup or sugar from GMO sugar beets. No, thank you.

I looked especially close at the fall salad recipes since that is the season we are heading into. Apple cauliflower chopped salad, Avocado grape salad with pecans, and Kale & Brussels spouts salad, oh my! Just to name a few.

For just a short time, you can buy this book as a part of the End of Summer eBook Bundle – that is 30 eBooks for only $39! Less than $1.50 per book. Click here to check out the deal and the other great books that are included!

Blemish Busting Bentonite Clay Face Mask http://wholegreenlove.com/2013/08/08/blemish-busting-bentonite-clay-face-mask/ http://wholegreenlove.com/2013/08/08/blemish-busting-bentonite-clay-face-mask/#comments Thu, 08 Aug 2013 22:22:14 +0000 http://wholegreenlove.com/?p=5183

My skin is super confused lately. I’m not sure if I got too much sun on vacation or if it’s high stress levels or what, but my skin needed a little tough love. I could tell it was a bit oily and irritated with some random breakouts. No bueno.

I have a bag of bentonite clay that I wanted to find a good skin care use for. Bentonite clay is great for the skin because it absorbs toxins and adds beneficial minerals. Some people even take bentonite clay internally as a way to detox the body.

Another powerful skin product is apple cider vinegar. It works well as an astringent and also does a good job of drying out breakouts. Some people use it as a toner to fight blemishes, so I thought it would be perfect in this face mask recipe.

Blemish Busting Bentonite Clay Face Mask | WholeGreenLove.com

You may notice that your skin appears a bit pink or red after you wash off the mask. This goes away shortly, if it happens at all (sometimes my skin gets red and sometimes it doesn’t) and what is left is smooth, clean, detoxed skin. When my skin is breaking out, that’s usually gone in a day or two after using this mask.

If you are looking for something for more sensitive skin, consider using water in place of apple cider vinegar for making this mask.

Do you use bentonite clay for beauty products or for detoxing?

13 Ways to Use Coconut Oil http://wholegreenlove.com/2013/08/01/13-ways-to-use-coconut-oil/ http://wholegreenlove.com/2013/08/01/13-ways-to-use-coconut-oil/#comments Fri, 02 Aug 2013 02:11:09 +0000 http://wholegreenlove.com/?p=5164

Coconut oil is seriously the best. The benefits of this healthful oil include:

  • Antifungal and antibacterial properties
  • Supports the immune system
  • Supports the thyroid gland
  • It works great as a skin moisturizer
  • It can be heated to a high temperature when cooking without oxidizing

13 Ways to Use Coconut Oil | WholeGreenLove.com

Some people shy away from using coconut oil when they are cooking certain foods because they are worried it will change the taste of their end product, in a bad way. Like, give it too much of a sweet or tropical flavor. I agree and use coconut oil only in certain dishes for cooking, but there are so many awesome ways to use coconut oil.

  1. Use it to pop popcorn and sprinkle with a little Himalayan salt
  2. Prep cake pans, muffin tins, pie plates, and baking sheets by coating them with coconut oil, instead of cooking spray
  3. Plop a tablespoon of it in your smoothie and blend away
  4. Slather it on your skin as a soothing moisturizer
  5. Use it as an ingredient in homemade sunscreen
  6. Put it on scrapes or bites as an anti-septic ointment
  7. Use it as lip balm
  8. A little smoothed through your hair can help tame any frizzies
  9. Use it on baby’s bum as a diaper cream
  10. Use it as a nipple cream after nursing
  11. Froth up a spoonful of coconut oil in your coffee
  12. Combine coconut oil and sugar cane crystals for a moisturizing body scrub
  13. Mix coconut oil and baking soda for a natural toothpaste

What’s your favorite way to use coconut oil?

Here are some great recipes that include coconut oil:

Lyla’s Favorite Breakfast Smoothie

Tamanu Oil Hand Lotion

Slow Cooker Cinnamon Apple Steel Cut Oats
