If are you are a regular reader of this blog, you know that our first love is food. Real, wholesome, from scratch, nourishing food. We don’t avoid flour, sugar, fat, dairy, or other things that some blogs avoid because we love it all because we think that moderate consumption of everything made from scratch (even some sugar) is okay. What first comes to my mind when I think of eating real food, staying active, and keeping my family’s life in balance is certainly the fact that it makes us feel good, get sick less often, have more energy, sleep well, and hopefully prevent chronic illnesses down the road. These things are well-documented and researched benefits of a healthy lifestyle.
I heard someone say recently that they think people need to be less “crazy” about the foods they eat. She felt very strongly that God has a plan for everyone and even if you avoid all of that junk, you can still end up with cancer if that is the plan He has for you. She said it’s great to be educated about food, but to stop getting so hung up on nutrition because if God wants you to get cancer, you will.

I’m well aware of the fact that people who work hard to avoid environmental toxins, food dyes, GMO foods, and junk food in general may still get cancer or some other disease. And someone who eats crap food, never exercises, and drinks food dye cool aid all day long, might never develop any kind of illness. God has a plan for everyone.
But here’s why I think it’s important we are conscious of our food choices and overall health decisions, from a Christian standpoint.
As a Christian, a very easy place to go first is the reminder in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 that our body is a temple of the Holy Spirit.
1 Corinthians 6: 19-20: Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.
While this passage is referring to sexual immorality and not specifically to the food we put in our body, God’s desire is for us to honor Him with our body. That means nourishing it with healthy foods and not polluting it with junk. Also, how are we to carry out His plan and be good witness for Him if we are constantly dealing with the consequences of an unhealthy lifestyle? We can certainly serve God and others more effectively if we have first taken the time to nourish ourselves properly.
If you take a trip back to Genesis and the Garden of Eden we know that God created man and woman with care and consideration. In the same way that we wish a safe, happy, and healthy life for our own children, God wants the same for what He created – for us to respect and care for our bodies.
The Bible also reminds us that God calls us to be stewards of the earth and the animals that live on it.
Genesis 1:28: God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”
Leviticus 25:23-24: The land is mine and you are but aliens and my tenants. Throughout the country that you hold as a possession, you must provide for the redemption of the land.
We may need to rethink our regular purchases at the grocery store as it related to feedlot beef, chickens raised inhumanely, and produce coming from farms that destroy the earth with their pesticide use. While most people make the decision to spend more time sourcing their food strictly for health reasons, have you thought of how your dollar influences the care or destruction of the earth and the animals on it? Are you supporting farmers who would treat the animals the same way that you would if you cared for animals in your own back yard? What would God think of the way that we are currently caring for and managing his creation? Since most of us are no longer farmers to be direct stewards of the land and animals, do our purchases support what would be pleasing to Him?
Whether you are a Christian or not, you are likely making good food choices already if you are a regular reader of this blog. My goal with this post was to think about real food and caring for ourselves from a little bit of a different perspective.
