Tea Thyme | Whole Green Love

Ugh. I just came down with a nasty cold and figured out that I always get one cold in the fall and another in the spring. Apparently, I was due. I was so congested this morning that I couldn’t even get the water in my neti pot to flow through my sinuses. I was going to visit a client and the person I went with and I decided that it was best for her to present and for me to talk as little as possible. I sounded too gross when I talked and blew my nose…and coughed. I just sipped my water, sucked on my Burt’s Bees cough drops, and did a lot of nodding and smiling.

I have a go-to honey and lemon concoction that I’ve used before to calm a nasty cough. Click here to check it out. This time I was looking for something different to try. I wanted a hot beverage to sip on to calm my cough, fight congestion, detox my bod, and help me slip off to sleep.

I knew I needed to include honey in my tea time beverage. It’s a serious throat soother and full of phytonutrients, flavonoids, and enzymes. The other ingredient I wanted to use was thyme. This fabulous herb (that thankfully I had recently frozen from our garden) is known for its expectorant, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, and antioxidant properties. It’s been used to treat coughs since forever.

Thyme and Honey Tea

2 tablespoons of fresh thyme

8 ounces of boiling water

1 tablespoon honey

Pour the boiling water over the thyme. Let the thyme and water steep for about 5 minutes. Pour the water and thyme mixture over a strainer and into a mug to remove the loose thyme leaves. Stir honey into the hot tea. Sip, relax, and recover.

This combination of steeped thyme and honey was surprisingly delicious! Most importantly, it calmed my cough and let me drift off to a restful sleep.
