Although I work hard to prevent those nasty little colds from infiltrating my system, sometimes it just happens. So I deal with the stuffy nose, sneezing, and coughing until my body has rocked the bug from my system. In the meantime, I really don’t like taking cold and cough medicines to get me though it. I just haven’t found them to be effective for me and I don’t like the side effects that come along with using them. So I hydrate like a maniac with water and tea, use my neti pot to help with nasal congestion, and make sure to get plenty of restful sleep.
Recently, I came down with a wicked summer cold, which was accompanied by a yucky cough. We actually don’t keep any of those typical over the counter cold/cough medicines in our house and I was looking for a cough medicine recipe with ingredients I just happened to have in our kitchen. Through some research and experimenting in the kitchen, I discovered a simple cough remedy I’d like to share:
The juice from half of a fresh lemon
2 tablespoons of honey
Mix that little concoction together and you’ve got yourself one serving of delectable cough syrup! Wow was it tasty! More importantly, it tamed my cough for a couple of hours, which was the best part.
Adult version: My husband’s addition to the yummy mixture is a shot of whiskey to dull the pain of a sore throat and help your body drift into a sweet slumber. This is best heated. Also, consider adding some water to the drink if you’d like.
What ways do you naturally combat a cold?
