3 Reasons your Body Needs Grass-fed Butter | Whole Green Love

Those who are passionate about the real food movement are already strong believers in the benefits of consuming grass-fed/pastured animal products. The benefits reach far beyond the improved living conditions and general health of animals that are allowed to live as they should. The nutrition our body gets from pastured animals (and the products that come from them: milk, butter, and eggs, for example) is on a whole other level. Did you know that 85 to 95 percent of cows in the United States are being raise in confinement? That’s not good for you or for them.

We are what our meat eats.

And because what your dairy cows eat will dictate the nutritional value of the butter you’re spreading on your toast, using to cook your eggs, baking with, and licking off of your fingers, it’s important to know the benefits of grass-fed butter.

1. Grass-fed butter has a healthier omega 6 to omega 3 ratio. The goal is to have a diet with a ratio of 1 for these essential fatty acids (some say up to a 4:1 ratio is still good). Cows grazing on pasture produce butter that has a very balanced omega 3 to 6 ratio. The average American’s diet contains 14-25 times more omega 6 fatty acids than omega 3 fatty acids. Have you taken a look at the state of health of the average American lately? Um….

2. Grass-fed butter contains more nutrients than grain-fed butter. If you’ve ever compared the color of grass-fed vs. grain-fed butter, you know what I’m talking about. The dark, rich yellow (sometimes golden) color of grass-fed butter outshines it’s sad friend any day. And we know that our body digs other types of foods, like fruits and vegetables, that are rich in color. Deeper, brighter colors = more nutrients. CLA (Conjugated linoleic acid) is bumpin’ in grass-fed butter. Your body loves this stuff. It is found to be protective against cancer and people consuming ample amounts of CLA see a reduction in body fat and build more muscle. Booyah.

Eating butter does not mean you will get fat. Period. I don’t want to hear that from anyone. ever. again.

3. The flavor of grass-fed butter is out of this world and cannot compare to regular butter. Hey guys: I have no study for this or scientific source beyond what my taste buds tell me each and every time I slather butter all up on my food, like, every day. I don’t even know how to compare the taste besides saying that grass-fed butter actually has flavor. Which, in my opinion, every food should.

Where can you find grass fed butter?

It isn’t as hard to find as you’d think. Knowing your local farmer and buying directly from them is an excellent option. If you can’t do that, you should be able to find Kerrygold on regular store shelves. I buy my Kerrygold from Trader Joe’s for a very reasonable price.
