The recent publicity of the stance against Monsanto and genetically modified foods (GMOs) as a whole has been encouraging. The dangers of consuming foods containing GMO ingredients is becoming more known and the impact that eating these ingredients is starting to give people the heebie geebies. Thankfully. You can read Joanna’s post about what it means for something to be genetically modified and the dangers of consuming GMO foods here.

Especially promising are the changes large corporations are making in their stance related to GMOs. Understandably, most companies are resistant to removing GMO ingredients from what they use in their products. Talk about a complete overhaul! To have to source new ingredients, which could be more expensive and may change the end product I’m sure is not something companies look forward to.

Recently, Ben & Jerry’s agreed to remove all GMO ingredients from all of their products. In addition, they are pushing for GMO labeling on all food products, which is a huge blow to Monsanto and it’s lobbyists. Booyah.

Click here to thank Ben & Jerry’s for this important step in the right direction. They and all companies who choose to remove GMO ingredients from their products need our support and a reminder that they ARE making a move that satisfies their customers.

One of the questions I get most often is, “how do I know the foods I’m buying from the grocery store or farmers’ market aren’t genetically modified?” Until things change in this country and genetically modified foods are labeled, you will either need to move to one of the other 61 countries that require labeling, or follow our tips below.

1.  Know which foods are currently genetically modified.

Scientists have figured out how to genetically modify the following foods: alfalfa, sugar beets, canola, soy, corn, cotton, papaya, zucchini, and yellow squash. Companies like Monsanto are working tirelessly to add to that list, so stay informed.

Check out the ingredient list on this “healthy” cereal. It contains sugar (likely derived from sugar beets), canola oil, and soy lecithin. Three GMO ingredients in a food people buy for their children to eat every morning!

2.  Choose 100% organic foods. All organic food is produced without genetically modified ingredients. Period.

3.  If you are buying processed “organic foods”, check labels twice that say “made with organic ingredients”. Everything in the product should be organic or check to be sure that any foods listed in #1 that could possibly be genetically modified are specifically listed as organic in the ingredient list.

4.  Do not buy regular white sugar. A majority of white table sugar found in the grocery store comes from sugar beets, which are genetically modified. To sweeten your food choose cane sugar, honey, sucanat, turbinado, molasses, maple syrup, or organic sugar which would not be made from sugar beets.

5.  Dump the canola oil. You should get rid of canola oil for a number of other health reasons, but 90 percent of the US crop is genetically modified, so stick with olive oil, butter, lard, avocado oil, or coconut oil instead. I’ve actually never seen organic canola oil. GMO canola oil is pretty impossible to avoid if you buy canola oil at all.

6.  Look for these labels. It doesn’t mean the product is healthy, but it means it does not contain GMO ingredients.

I hope this helps in your grocery shopping adventures! Also, do an audit in your own kitchen to confirm you don’t have any GMO foods lurking about. I do my best to keep them out of our kitchen, but we certainly have slip ups. I don’t get crazy and throw the food out on the spot (I hate to waste), but make a note of it, finish the products, and never. buy it. again.
