How to Clean & Disinfect your Makeup Brushes without Chemicals | Whole Green Love

Have you found the best way to clean your makeup brushes? I have!

I hate the idea of buying separate products for everything in life. I like finding ways to whip up something with ingredients I already have to get the job done.

When you are cleaning your makeup brushes, two things need to be accomplished; the brushes must get clean and all of that icky bacteria that has accumulated from many applications to your face needs to be eliminated.

Here is a recipe I recently used to clean my makeup brushes that worked really well!

Makeup Brush Cleaner

1 ½ cups warm water

1 Tbsp shampoo

5 drops of tea tree oil

Mix the water, shampoo, and tea tree oil in a bowl or jar and place next to a sink. Collect your makeup brushes and rinse each under warm water to remove any makeup that will rinse away easily. One at a time, swirl each brush in the soapy solution for about 10 seconds, remove it, and swirl it in the palm of your hand. This will suds up the solution in the brush (if your shampoo gets sudsy) and add some friction to the cleaning process clean to remove any deep down dirt. Rinse well, reshape, and lay the brushes on their side to air dry. Repeat with all of the brushes you wish to clean.

Depending on how many makeup brushes you need to clean, consider remixing some new solution. I found my water was pretty makeup-y when I was done cleaning five brushes. The last brush I washed was easily cleaned, but I would have whipped up another batch of this if I were washing more.

In doing my own research, I noticed that many makeup brush cleaner recipes called for vinegar.  I love using vinegar for cleaning and disinfecting in all other situations, but you need to be careful to not use anything that will be too harsh on the brush bristles. I was worried that vinegar may make the bristles dry and brittle. Tea tree oil has amazing bacteria killing properties, so it’s great for a job like this.

There are a lot of great “natural” shampoo options or recipes to make your own. I use a shampoo made by a regular beauty company, but it does not contain silicone, parabens, or dye. Click here to check it out.

What do you use to clean your makeup brushes? Do you have a recipe you make at home or do you use a store bought option?
