Margaritas in December? Yes, please! | Whole Green Love

You probably think I should be sharing a holiday drink recipe, like a healthy or homemade version of eggnog or some other kind of holiday punch. I’m going another route today. I’m not complaining about winter (especially when it’s only December!), because I really do love experiencing all of the seasons here in Wisconsin, but sometimes being locked up inside on snowy days makes me crave a little something to remind me of hot, summery weather. Plus, I’ve got a little tip to make this into a holiday drink if you just can’t bring yourself to drink a classic margarita in the winter.

I love tequila! So, margaritas are my favorite! This refreshing alcoholic beverage is delicious in the summer, but I think it’s great any time of year. My husband and I love Mexican food so this tasty drinky-poo goes great along with any meal.

One can get in trouble with making margaritas with store bought margarita mix. Sometimes just watching that syrupy, sugary mix being poured in my glass is enough to make my stomach hurt. So I came up with an alternative margarita recipe to save on some sugar and calories. Grab the items listed below. Let’s make some drinks! I know it’s Monday, but it’s never to early to start planning for the weekend…or maybe you had a rough day?

What you will need to make two tasty margaritas:

-2 shots of tequila

-The juice of 1 freshly squeezed lime

-Plenty of ice

-Lemon-lime soda to fill up the remainder of the glasses

Pour the tequila and lime juice into a shaker filled with ice. Shake, shake, shake! After you have salted the rims of your margarita glass to your liking, pour the tequila/lime combo evenly into both glasses. Top the glasses off with the soda. Sometimes, when I’m feeling sassy, I add a shot of triple sec to the shaker, in addition to the tequila.

I feel silly giving you directions for something so easy, but there it is! So simple! If drinking this in the winter leaves you confused and wondering where the sunny beach is located, add a splash of cranberry juice to turn it into something a bit more wintery. Look how lovely my marg looks next to the Christmas décor!

Be mindful of the type of soda you are buying for this recipe. I’m thrilled to see that our local grocery store is starting to sell sodas sweetened with cane sugar, rather than corn syrup. Jones Lemon Lime or Sierra Mist’s new natural version sweetened with sugar cane. While added sugar (not including fruit!) in our diet should be limited no matter the source, opting for soda with cane sugar instead of corn syrup may be a slightly better option for our bodies. The jury is still out on this debate, but I know my body knows what cane sugar is, so I prefer to buy products with ingredients I know my body recognizes.
