Anyone who knows me knows that I’m obsessed with drinking water. I get anxiety when I don’t have a bottle of water with me. It’s like I think I’ll somehow get stranded mid-day in the desert without water and shrivel up. Why am I like this? I justify my craziness with the fact that it is SO important to get plenty of water each day. And I just want it with me at all times. No exceptions.
What do you carry your water around in?
Besides the fact that using disposable water bottles is a huge waste of plastic and a problem for the environment, the materials a plastic bottle is made with could be harmful to your health. According to WebMD, a compound called bisphenol A (BPA) that is found in hard and clear polycarbonate plastics has been shown to cause some concerning physiological changes in humans, especially infants and young children. An exposure to another chemical found in bottles called phthalates can lead to reproductive problems in infants and young children, especially boys. Although some bottles have had BPA removed, they are finding that the plastic is still leeching a type of estrogen mimicking chemical into our food and water. Additionally, if we are using these bottles (or food containers made with the same material) to heat liquids or food, the chemicals that come out of the plastic and enter our food or drink is even greater. Ugh.
Am I stuck with sipping chemicals?
Post workout hydration!
We know the solution here is not to avoid drinking water. It’s to find a new type of bottle to carry your hydration in! My personal favorite is the Klean Kanteen. I’ve gotten so much use out of this baby! I’ve had my Klean Kanteen for almost 3 years and it has held up so well. I throw the bottle in the dishwasher and do a quick handwashing of the cap to keep it clean. It’s very durable and the cap doesn’t leak. Klean Kanteen boasts a BPA-free and super durable product thanks to its food grade stainless steel material.
If you are looking for a glass bottle alternative, check out the beautiful Lifefactory bottles. They come with several different silicone sleeve color options. The sleeve gives you a nice grip to hold onto the bottle and provides a little protection from the inevitable dropsy moment. Lifefactory’s bottles are BPA, phthalate, PVC, and polycarbonate free. Bonus! I think my next water bottle purchase will be the Lifefactory glass bottle with the spring green sleeve. Love this color! They also offer baby bottle options for parents seeking an alternative for the conventional version.
I love that both of these options are dishwasher safe and offer wide mouth versions so you can use them to brew tea, pop in some ice cubes, and have enough room to get in there and scrub it clean.
Once you switch to an alterative to the classic plastic water bottle, it’s great to know that you aren’t getting a host of chemicals with the water you drink to purify and detox your body!
Do you have a favorite brand of water bottle that is BPA-free?
