Yogurt is a staple in so many homes. We always have yogurt on hand, whether it’s for a meal or snack, it’s bound to get into our bellies one way or another. All yogurt is not created equal. Just like you may consider where your meat or eggs are coming from, you may want to pay closer attention to your yogurt source and ingredients too!
Laura has made her own yogurt in a crockpot…you can find her recipe here. I have been busy enough lately that I haven’t gotten around to making it myself, but look forward to trying my hand at it! It looks pretty simple and is also quite economical as well!
I have found a farm stand that is open on Saturdays where I can get fresh homemade raw milk yogurt…it’s fantastic! Hey, if I don’t have time to make it, I’d rather purchase the homemade variety from someone in my community!
I will buy yogurt from the grocery store as well, but keep it very simple…whole milk, cream on top, plain yogurt. When you look at the yogurt section of a grocery store it’s like a yogurt explosion of every possibility you could imagine. You have to be so careful though with ingredient lists and would probably be surprised by all the “stuff” you can find in something labeled simply, “strawberry yogurt”. Between artificial sweeteners, stabilizers, preservatives, and high fructose corn syrup, there can be a lot of non-yogurt ingredients in your yogurt cup.
Whether I’m buying from my yogurt stand or a quality variety from the grocery store, I sweeten or flavor yogurt right before I eat it. That way you have control over everything you are putting in your mouth from the granola, to the fruit, to the maple syrup drizzle.
You’ll probably find your yogurt tastes so much better when you add your own flavor to it.
Depending in how sweet or ripe your fruit is you may not even have to sweeten it up. I find that the cream on top yogurt gives it just the right amount of natural sweetness most of the time.
Do you have favorite yogurt brands you turn to? Or how about a homemade yogurt recipe that you make? We’d love to hear how you dress your yogurt up!
