Our daughter is getting to the age now where we are signing her up for activities and classes that put her in situations where she will be eating food that the outside world eats. Can you see my scared face from where you are sitting? Lyla just started a wonderful toddler class through our church. She couldn’t be more excited about it! It’s also a great way to get her to expend some energy during these long, frigid winter months when it’s sometimes dangerous to play outside. Thanks, Wisconsin. The class is only an hour and a half long, but they have snack time half way through the class – probably a good opportunity to teach socialization. For a mom who is (admittedly) extremely selective about what goes into Lyla’s mouth, the thought of others getting to choose what she eats for a snack makes me uncomfortable. I’m sure parents of children with allergies are even more uncomfortable than I am. There are kids in the class with allergies to dairy, wheat, nuts, and eggs. Yes. I AM one of those moms who likes to control each and every bite of food that goes into Lyla’s mouth. I’m a mom. It’s my right. And I’ll do it until my daughter is old enough to be out there in the world making her own (hopefully smart) choices. Before your eyes start to roll (caught ya!), let me just say something. That I totally get it – it’s one snack a week…Lyla will be in school soon and I’ll have less control over these things…she’ll get older and will be more aware of what others are eating and will want those things too…she doesn’t have food allergies so one unhealthy snack won’t kill her. I get it. Aaaand I still don’t like it. All I have control over is the week that I get to bring a snack for the rest of the group, so that’s what I’m focusing on! I did a little searching, scanning of grocery shelves, and brain picking of some of my favorite real food blogger friends. Here are a few great allergen free recipes for your own child or ideas to share with a group of hungry kids:

What do you send as a healthy snack for your kid’s classes, school, activities, etc?

I’m going through this exact same thing right now as I’m checking out preschools for my daughter… Glad I’m not the only mom thinking this way. Great post!
