It sure is a shame that hot chocolate packets mixed with water still exist. Especially when the ingredients below are what is in an extremely popular hot chocolate mix. It took some serious searching for this information. After about 10 minutes of googling, I had to find the ingredients list from an independent website. Sadly, these companies don’t feel proud enough of their wholesome ingredients to give more information on their website.

Ingredients: sugar, corn syrup, modified whey, cocoa (processed with alkali), hydrogenated coconut oil, nonfat milk, calcium carbonate, less than 2% of: salt, dipotassium phosphate, mono- and diglyderides, artificial flavor. Contains milk.

For some more awesomeness: these ingredients come from the Keurig website for a popular hot chocolate Keurig cup.

INGREDIENTS: CORN SYRUP, SUGAR, COCOA (PROCESSED WITH ALKALI), HYDROGENATED COCONUT OIL, NONFAT MILK, SALT, LESS THAN 2% OF: DIPOTASSIUM PHOSPHATE, DEXTROSE, MONO- AND DIGLYCERIDES, ACESULFAME POTASSIUM, CARRAGEENAN, NATURAL AND ARTIFICIAL FLAVOR, SUCRALOSE.

What a sad ingredients list. Have you read our post about carrageenan?

Making hot chocolate from scratch is easy peasy – no need for those powdered packets.

This is a great post-sledding/playing in the snow treat. Throw all of the ingredients in the crockpot before you head out, and you will have a hot, creamy, chocolaty treat waiting when you return. Serving to a group of people? Set out a hot chocolate bar of toppings like marshmallows, cinnamon, nutmeg, cocoa powder for sprinkling, candy canes, and sprinkles.

It’s the perfect recipe for a party! You don’t have to slave over the stove stirring the hot chocolate waiting for everything to combine and heat up and it will stay nice and hot throughout your get together.

Plus, it actually contains ingredients that you can pronounce.

Cheers!
