Humidify for Health

I recently posted about safely using a neti pot. And if you’ve used one before you probably know why I’m obsessed. Perfect for clearing up congested sinuses, it’s also great for keeping those nasal passages nice and moisturized during the dry winter months. I can definitely tell when our furnace kicks into high gear and I wake up with my nasal passages feeling like the desert. Seriously. A desert. If you aren’t using a neti pot or if you’re looking for another way to moisten those nasal passages hook yourself up with a humidifier.

The benefits of humidifiers include keeping your skin and nasal passages moisturized, congestion relief, prevention of nosebleeds, and easier breathing for allergy sufferers. If our nasal passages are dry and the mucus that our nose needs to keep out invaders dries up, we become more susceptible to the common cold, flu, and sinus infections. Blah! Nothing like one of those to ruin your day! Think about that. Multiple health benefits and no medications needed. Just a little humidity can do the trick.

Until we were recently shopping around for a humidifier for Lyla’s bedroom, I had no idea what the difference was between a warm and cool mist humidifier. Ultimately, there is no difference in the health benefits they provide. They both do an equally good job of humidifying a room. Safety wise, a cool mist humidifier is better for a child’s room since it doesn’t have a heating element that produces a hot base or produce hot mist. For this reason, we have a cool mist humidifier in Lyla’s room and a warm mist one in ours. When I do get a cold, the hot steam that comes from our humidifier feels so nice to breathe in. Something to keep in mind though is that a warm mist humidifier can use up more energy since it has a heating element.

Don’t let your humidifier become a household health hazard! Clean it often and follow the directions provided in the packaging. If yours is on the older side and you’re noticing some mineral deposits and build up that can no longer be cleaned, replace it.

If your bod is feeling a little parched this winter take a look into using a humidifier in your bedroom. It’s an inexpensive way to breathe easier, possibly prevent those nasty winter bugs, and keep your skin soft and supple.

    Consider your house before buying a humidifier:

    We recently had a baby so I thought a humidifier would be a great idea. Our baby (all of us) had a cold a few after he was born, so I plugged in the humidifier, a brand new 99% germ free warm mist Vicks humidifier. In the meantime we are doing breastfeeding & formula, so everyday I sterilize all the bottles etc with a huge pot of boiling water.

    Recently, both our baby and ourselves had been sneezing more than seemed normal. Now when I sterilize the bottles most of our house windows get steamy. Well taking a peek to the bottom of our windows I noticed with all the moisture in the air, mold had formed on the METAL!

    I’m getting rid of my humidifier now as we clearly do not have a dry air problem but a humidity problem.

      Hi Caroline,
      I’m glad you posted this! You are right, and I should have mentioned in my post to be aware of the current humidity level in your home. Depending on your climate and home, the humidity level might be just right already. I did a little snooping around the internet and it looks like the EPA recommends that it be between 30-50%. Between that range, it’s humid enough, but not so much that you get a mold problem. We have an indoor/outdoor weather thing in our home and our current humidity level is 44%. I think it’s something I’ll keep a closer eye on. Some might be able to fix low humidity simply by placing a bowl of water in a room to let it evaporate.
