How crazy is it that the holiday season is just around the corner? I have already started my Christmas shopping to get a little head start…although I know there are probably many of you out there who already have their Christmas shopping DONE! Kudos to you! I do about 90% of my Christmas shopping online…on amazon in particular. I seem to find exactly what I’m looking for, for a great price, and I’m able to completely avoid the scary situation of any shopping mall. Phew!
While I am most definitely the least crafty and creative person on the planet and I avoid making homemade gifts like the plague, I found a body scrub recipe that I couldn’t pass up. While searching for ideas for make Christmas stockings for my family (what is with my pull towards these homemade crafts lately??) I ran across a recipe for body scrub on Martha Stewart’s website. I adapted the Queen of Crafts recipe to make it my own because I didn’t think my body scrub needed any food coloring and I thought it was a bit light in the scent department with the recommendations Martha gave. Here is my rendition.
Homemade Moisturizing Body Scrub
1 cup carrier oil (I used olive oil)
15 drops of essential oil (I used grapefruit)
Mix together the sugar, carrier oil, and drops of essential oil. Divide the scrub up into little pretty jars or tins to give as gifts…or save it all for yourself!
I chose a cane sugar with nice, large crystals and a natural, brownish color. The original recipe that I found showed using white sugar and using food coloring to make it pretty. I think that the natural color of the cane sugar is beautiful just by itself.
Use any carrier oil you already have in the house or the type you prefer. I used olive oil for my scrub because ounce for ounce, it’s relatively inexpensive compared to other carrier oils (jojoba, grapeseed, almond) and I already had plenty of olive oil in the house. Jojoba oil would be a great choice!
I was looking for an invigorating scent for the body scrub – who doesn’t love a little kick to get the day started when you hit the shower in the morning? For a scrub down in the evening, make a scrub that includes lavender for a calming scent.
I have not yet used this scrub in the shower, but I’ve used it several times on my hands just over the kitchen sink. I’m doing so much hand washing these days since I’m caring for my little baby Lyla that my hands need some serious moisture TLC lately. I don’t even want to know what they will be like when winter kicks in. This scrub left my hands so incredibly soft and silky! The grapefruit scent was perfect for a mid-day jolt and the scent lingered on my hands. I couldn’t stop sniffing them!
This body scrub recipe is perfect for pampering yourself, a DIY gift, or as a stocking stuffer. Look for pretty containers online or for a cheaper route, go to your local thrift store for a variety of glass jars. Those places are always jam packed with shelves and shelves of glassware! Consider making a few different batches of this scrub with a different scent each time. Let your friends and family pick the scent that they like best.
And if you haven’t started Christmas shopping yet, don’t worry. Just pick up the three lovely ingredients listed above and get a jump start on a thoughtful little gift that anyone would love!
What essential oil would you use for this DIY body scrub?PAID ENDORSEMENT DISCLOSURE: In order for us to support our blogging activities, we may receive monetary compensation or other types of remuneration for our endorsement, recommendation, testimonial and/or link to any products or services from this blog.
